Discover the secrets of traditional Italian balsamic vinegar
06 October 2021 | 10am – 1:30pm
When the time came to make our very own balsamic vinegar, we turned to the masters of la dolce vita for inspiration. With this artisanal venture, we salute true DOP-style balsamic vinegar, but with a twist of our own. Our resident balsamic man, Klaas Stoffberg, will start with a cellar tour, explaining the traditional methods and production processes used to create this heavenly liquid – from picking and pressing grapes, boiling the grape juice as well as the lengthy maturation process. In our maturation space, the balsamic vinegar is poured over into a smaller barrel every year until, at last, it is ready to be used in our kitchens. Join us for this very special occasion of bottling from the smallest barrel in the battery – pure black gold! A tasting of this rare and sought-after delicacy will follow.

Discover the secret life of bees in spring
13 October 2021 | 10 am – 3pm
We host our workshops during the warmer seasons, when our garden is buzzing with Cape honeybees, hard at work foraging for pollen and nectar. Our workshop starts with a guided walk through the garden to explore bee favourites, from nectar-filled annual flowers to pollen-rich trees. We then invite you to put on your beekeeping suit and discover our collection of diverse beehives – including the traditional woven skep, the practical Langstroth with moveable frames and the much-talked-about flow hives. Our beekeeper, Arné Stander, will tell the story of the indigenous Cape honeybee and explain the basics of beekeeping.

Picking and pressing flowers
20 October 2021 | 10am – 3pm
Remember plucking dainty blooms in the garden as a child, then carefully placing them between newspaper and piles of the heftiest books you could find? Flower-pressing is back in a big way, and we love the practice for its calming effect and aesthetic appeal. Botanists also rely on pressed plants for identification and to fill their herbariums with dried specimens as plant libraries. Join Liesl van der Walt, our head gardener, and Gundula Deutschländer, our healing herb expert, as they guide you through the garden to pick, identify and fill your press with your own botanical collection.
