With guided tours\, unique riel dance performances\, a market as well as children’s entertainment and photo opportunities\, the day promises not only fun\, but also the chance to learn more about the comprehensive history of Afrikaans and the historical Taalmuseum. On 28 May\, a panel discussion will take place to further commemorate this day.\nThe International Museum Council (ICOM) has been celebrating International Museum Day since 1977\, during which museums around the world on or around 18 May use the opportunity to express a specific theme in creative ways and through special activities. This year’s theme is “The power of museums” which highlights the potential of museums to bring about positive change in their communities. Sustainability as part of the United Nations’ development goals\, the power of innovating on digitalisation and access\, as well as the potential to help build stronger communities through education are the three focal points for this year.\nTo give practical expression to this\, the ATM sponsors the transport and meals for a group of seniors from Sunfield\, Wellington\, and free admission to all\, as far as time and space allow. The event is from 09:00 to 13:00 at 11 Pastorie Avenue; free guided tours will take place between 11:00 and 13:00. During this time\, visitors will learn more about the history of the house\, the Genootskap vir Regte Afrikaners\, Arabic-Afrikaans and the development of the language\, from way back to the future.\nOutside\, a jumping castle will entertain the children and a market will provide visitors with food and drinks; curios will also be on sale. In addition\, a large photo frame will stand in front of the museum where people can have photos taken of themselves and receive it immediately for only R30.\nTo further celebrate International Museum Day\, a free panel discussion will also be held on 28 May 2022 where the meaning of museums and institutions’ name changes will be examined. This popular course\, presented for the seventh year\, is suitable for librarians\, museum and heritage workers\, records staff and archive assistants.\nDe Vaal is a qualified archivist with many years of experience in the fields of records management and archives. As a consultant\, researcher\, heritage worker\, project leader and trainer she came across the necessity and importance for libraries\, registries (records centres)\, museums and other related disciplines to work together and to learn more about archiving.\n“Staff that are not trained as archivists are often thrown into the deep end to look after their organisations’ unpublished documentary collections\,” says De Vaal. “This introductory three-day workshop is designed for all information officers to learn what they need to know in terms of archiving; no previous knowledge is required.\nThe workshop includes practical sessions and focusses on topics such as the differences between libraries\, archives\, museums and registries; acquisition and collection; appraisal (including the value of records and disposal instructions); sorting and arrangement; description/indexing; preservation; disaster recovery plan; and tips on making the archives accessible.\nThe workshop costs R2 000 per person and takes place daily from 09:00 to 16:00 in the Conference Room in the Visitor Centre at the Taalmonument. Visits to the monument as well as tea and coffee are included\, but participants must bring their own lunch or can support the ATM Koffiehuis. In light of previous successful celebrations\, this year the monument offers free admission and music to all to attract as many visitors as possible. As this year’s official African Union theme for Africa Month is ‘The year of nutrition’ the ATM will place typical food recipes from all the African countries on its social media platforms.\nAccording to Michael Jonas\, director of the ATM\, the monument aims to make people aware of Afrikaans as an African language\, the language’s African roots (combined with its European and Eastern heritage) as well as the diversity of the Afrikaans-speaking community. “We not only consider the monument as a beacon of hope for the development of Afrikaans\, but for all African languages.”\nAt noon on the day\, the African Union’s official anthem will be played and the official flag hoisted to kickstart the event. Thereafter a free guided tour of the monument will take place; it will focus on the language’s African roots and Afrikaans’s influence on other African languages. Between 1 and 2pm\, the Marimba band will perform enchanting African songs.\nJonas suggests that families and friends make a wonderful day trip of it. “Bring a picnic (or order one in advance from the ATM Koffiehuis on 082 216 2510)\, and let the kids play in the playgrounds or enjoy the outdoor games. This gripping book on friendship and betrayal is described as “a gatskop novel about the agterjaarts and langstoepe of the sixties and seventies”. A stimulating conversation between him\, the ATM’s director\, Michael Jonas\, and the ATM’s board chair\, Jean Meiring\, promises to give guests a fascinating insight into this journalist-author and his book\, after which visitors can pose questions.\nKirby was born in Paarl and matriculated at Noorder-Paarl High School\, after which he qualified as a teacher. Since the late 1990s he has made his mark as a poet and his short stories have appeared in several volumes while his radio dramas have been broadcast on RSG. He was an editorial member of Insig\, Huisgenoot and Beeld\, and won a Mondi award\, Media24 Excellence award and ATKV-veertjies for his journalistic work. His debut novel was ‘Klapperhaar slaap nie stil nie’\, and as a translator he among others converted Carol Campbell’s ‘My children have faces’ into Afrikaans as ‘Karretjiemense’ and Chris van Wyk’s ‘Eggs to lay\, chickens to hatch’ as ‘Daar’s ‘n hoender wat ‘n eier nie kan lê’.\n‘Eugene’ has already won the third prize in NB Publishers’ Great Afrikaans Novel Competition 2021 and is being praised in the media. Rapport says “it was written in a language that does not hesitate to plant words like fists; yet it succeeds in capturing the complexity of the lives of an entire generation of people with particular sensitivity”. Vryeweekblad.com‘s reviewer writes: “The book that it reminds me of the most is ‘Kompoun’ by Ronelda Kamfer – people and their quirks and experiences\, their miserable suffering in an inhospitable environment and oppressive order are poetically articulated\, with an eye for detail and the absurd.” Huisgenoot’s book editor reckons this “craziness of suburban gardens and ghetto streets” may be the Afrikaans novel of the year.\nThe event is at 19:00 for 19:30 and takes place in the Taalmonument’s Visitor Centre\, after which guests are invited to the ATM Koffiehuis for free refreshments and the chance to acquire copies of the book.
