Bring your folks along for a dig in Babylonstoren’s sprawling gardens where we’ll learn to grow our very own veggies with Brent Reid from the Babylonstoren garden team. This will be a morning filled with picking, nibbling and planting. Discover frilly leaves and dig out strong root vegetables. Sow seeds, make cuttings and start potting your own plants. Escape the dreary Winelands winter and join master gardener Gundula Deutschländer for an earthy masterclass in root spices. Be prepared to get your hands dirty for this one, as you’ll be digging for turmeric and ginger gold. Spices like these are best harvested in winter when the plants are dormant and their superpowers preserved in the roots.
Turmeric, with its sunny flavour and bright colouring properties, will be a highlight of the day. The class will explore the various ways to harness its warm glow throughout the year – either fresh or dried, as a shot or in tea, fried or baked and even for paint or dye. Gundula will share her wisdom on growing and harvesting various other spices that you could try growing at home. Set in Babylonstoren’s ever-amiable Spice House, the class concludes with a hearty, belly-warming meal.
